Workplace Stress and Harassment Cause

Lasting Damage to Employees

The ongoing stress caused by workplace bullying can lead to emotional exhaustion, physical illness, financial instability, and long term career disruption.

At issue is the ability to convey to legislators that this law is useless and does nothing to help their constituents when it comes to the damaging effects of workplace bullying. Targets are usually the most productive employees. Their presence and work ethic threaten supervisors, bosses, and fellow workers. The problem is that this work ethic is subject to the toxicity of the workplace. Therefore, even if it is beneficial to the employer, the bully will do what they can to remove the target because they are threatened.

The result is that the targeted employee has no recourse against the underhanded and offensive behaviors that are then directed at them, while the stress of dealing with unfair accusations, continuous harassment, and discrimination occurs. HR does not help. They are part of the problem as they are focused on protecting the business from legal challenges, even if they are valid and within their purview to do something about.

Most employees are then faced with fear of retaliation if they do complain, and when they are forced out of the workplace, they are again faced with retaliation since the looming question is, “Why did you leave your last workplace?” This question cannot be answered without fear of further reprisals when their resume is vetted, or the lack of belief by the interviewer, or the instilled fear and bias that someone complaining about workplace bullying is a problem employee.
